Aquaponics, a sustainable system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics, is emerging as a promising solution to the global climate crisis, water scarcity, and food shortages by creating self-sustaining ecosystems that dramatically reduce water use and eliminate the need for chemical fertilizers or antibiotics. The article highlights how aquaponics is transforming urban spaces into eco-friendly environments that integrate food production, nature, and community well-being, while also gaining global attention as countries such as the United States, Europe, Japan, and the UAE expand related technologies and industries. In Korea, marine aquaponics is being developed through large-scale national R&D projects led by Seoul National University, Aquon Co., Ltd., and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, with the goal of commercializing energy-efficient land-based aquaculture systems by the 2030s. Beyond technological innovation, marine aquaponics is expected to revitalize local communities by creating sustainable jobs, supporting smart agricultural startups, and driving eco-friendly economic transformation.
